Real Madrid’s new Bernabeu facing backlash over ‘tiny seats and lack of toilets’
La Liga leaders Real Madrid have a mutiny on their hands as fans have criticised the club's new stadium.
Los Blancos revealed the new-but-perhaps-not-improved Santiago Bernabeu this past September after several years of delays. Construction began on the makeover back in 2019, but the Covid-19 pandemic meant work is still not fully completed, with the club expected to miss its latest estimate later this month.
But fans aren't happy despite all that time and the not insubstantial outlay of close to £1billion that's gone into the project. Although the new-look Bernabeu looks the part, it's understood many regular attendees are displeased with the quality of the facilities on offer.

Spanish journalist Paco Gonzalez appeared on COPE’s Tiempo de Juego (via Football Espana) and gave accounts from friends who are season ticket-holders at the ground. And it was their assertion the new seating is "incredibly narrow," while there are supposedly not enough toilets on offer.
At least not for normal paying customers, as it's alleged the bathroom allocation has been cut to increase the number of VIP boxes. Judging by those comments, it appears the Madrid juggernaut may have got Robin Hood's old motto the wrong way round.
Where does the Bernabeu rank among football's greatest grounds? Let us know in the comments section below.
Although Real's maximum capacity now rivals the biggest in Europe at just shy of 85,000 seats – compared to 81,000 prior to the renovation – that upgrade may have come at a cost. And it's regular fans who make up the vast majority of spectators who may be footing the bill.

Despite being open for fixtures from September, the club has pushed back its full completion date to late December. However, reports in Spain indicate that target won't be hit, meaning another delay until early 2024 is expected.
While the seats may be uncomfortable, fans have at least had plenty of reason to get out of them thanks to Real's success this season, both foreign and domestic. But even Jude Bellingham's heroics on all fronts may not be enough to quell fan frustration over the stadium's issues.
