Real Sociedad 0-1 Barcelona: Aubameyang heads in only goal of the game

Real Sociedad 0-1 Barcelona: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang heads in 11th goal since joining Catalans to get Xavi’s side back to winning ways and consolidate second place in LaLiga

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 11th minute
  • The former Arsenal man headed in at the back post after a bright Barca start
  • And after two defeats in a row, Xavi’s side held on to get back to winning ways
  • If they win on Sunday they will be all but assured of a top-four spot this season

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his 11th goal in his last 14 games for Barcelona to give them a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad.

The victory sends them back to second in La Liga and gives them a six-point advantage over fifth placed Betis. If they win their game in hand on Sunday against Rayo Vallecano they will be all but assured Champions League football again next season.

The former Arsenal striker gave Xavi’s team the lead on 11 minutes when he headed in from close range at the far post from Ferran Torres’ cross.

A Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang header gave Barcelona an important victory at Real Sociedad

The former Arsenal captain’s 11th minute header at the back post gave Barca all three points

Torres had been first to a loose ball after Ousmane Dembele’s shot came back off the post.

Real Sociedad should have equalised before half time but Alexsander Isak shot well wide when teed-up by Alex Sorloth.

The former Arsenal target is still stuck on five goals for the season.

Gerard Pique had been jeered every time he touched the ball and was struggling with a groin problem in the first half.

The controversy over his leaked phone conversations with Spanish Football Federation president Luis Ruibales had put the spotlight back on him.

Xavi had said he would thrive and he seemed to be more affected by the injury than the whistling.

He was not the only walking wounded in the second half as both Jordi Alba and Ronald Araujo went down with injuries. Araujo came off for Eric Garcia.

Dani Alves was the next defender to go down and like Araujo he had to come off replaced by Sergino Dest.

Real Sociedad continued to threaten but without reward and Barcelona had Marc Andre ter Stegen to thank for that. £

He kept them at bay with a brilliant stop to keep out Adan Januzaj’s cross-shot. He also blocked Sorloth’s effort with his heel.

Aubameyang scored his ninth league goal since joining Barcelona on a free back in January

Pique was finally taken off with 10 minutes left to loud whistles from all around the stadium.

Clement Lenglet came on for him, and like the four defenders who had started the game for Barcelona he needed treatment after a clash with Isak.

He soldiered on and Barcelona saw out 10 minutes of added time to get back to winning ways after being knocked out of the Europa League by Eintracht Frankfurt and humbled by lowly Cadiz.
