A Sky Sports reporter let his excitement over clubs now allowing press conferences to be conducted in-person get the better of him, firing off a party popper in celebration.

Gary Cotterill returned at Arsenal’s training complex along with the rest of the reporters on the Gunners' beat after a long absence away owing to Covid-19 protocols.

The pandemic has meant that the typical weekly managers’ conferences have had to be conducted via virtual meeting software.

But now, in a step closer to normal, the events are being held with everyone in the room.

But some people online believe that Cotterill’s popper celebration was a misstep, with Mikel Arteta’s face being a particular sign of the subsequent awkwardness in the room.

One wrote online: “Ye da’s letting party poppers off at press conferences.”

Another wrote: “The panic in Arteta's face as the bum slips his and is his pocket, looks like he's expecting a gun, in fairness, it would be the most attacking anyone has been near Arteta.”

A third said: “I am calling for a total and complete shutdown of in-person pressers until we can figure out what the hell is going on.”

One said: “Bet Arteta has requested to go back over Zoom.”

A last one wrote: “My toes are curling through the top of my shoes at the cringe.”

Despite the uproar, others have said that the moment was a bit of fun and shouldn’t be taken too seriously, with one calling the reporter a ‘legend’ for the antic.

Arteta was speaking ahead of his side’s game against Newcastle on Saturday.

The Magpies are desperately looking for their first win of the season and will be encouraged by their fine attacking display against Brentford last weekend.

The Gunners, meanwhile, are hoping to bounce back after their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool, as they hope to make a finish in the top six of the Premier League table.
