Rio Ferdinand makes Man Utd vs Newcastle Carabao Cup final prediction

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand is confident ahead of this weekend’s Carabao Cup final. The former defender’s old team take on Newcastle at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

United are looking to win their first major silverware in almost six years. The Europa League in 2017 was the last trophy the Red Devils lifted.

Erik ten Hag’s side will go into the match high on confidence after knocking Barcelona out of the Europa League and reaching the last-16 stage. Newcastle, meanwhile, are arguably on their worst run of the season so far.

They haven’t won any of their last four Premier League matches, scoring just two goals. They are also without suspended No 1 goalkeeper Nick Pope, with Loris Karius set to deputise.

Ferdinand got his prediction right on Thursday when he said it would be a 2-1 win for United. And he thinks it will be even more comfortable for them on Sunday.

Ferdinand told Vibe with Five: “Weekend, Carabao Cup final we are going to be in there. Newcastle are going to get put down, I said 2-1 today [vs Barcelona] I am going 2-0 at the weekend.

“Pope’s out, Newcastle are out of form, Man United in form and we are on the crest of a wave right now but I am not getting carried away.”

United are also still in the FA Cup and are just five points behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League. Ferdinand doesn’t want to get carried away amid talk of a potential quadruple.

But he can sense a major change at Old Trafford following Thursday’s win. He added: “I am not going to say ‘we’re back’ I am not going to get overhyped and go too far and become a meme but I am feeling something. I am feeling something.

“Fred – he has come in for a lot of stick Fred, he has shown character, he has shown a heart and he has come good. Big moment, comes in, bang. Hits it bottom corner.

“Gaffer makes a couple of substitutions, who scored the winner? Antony! Antony! That’s what you want to see, people coming off the bench making an impact, not sulking, adding to the cause, getting us through to the next round.

“Varane and Martinez, it was nice to sit there as a fan and admire and just go ‘Woah’. Martinez is like the leader at the back.”
