Manchester City have reached their first ever Champions League final and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has hailed a “totally dominant” performance from Pep Guardiola’s side. City beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 at the Etihad on Tuesday to go through to the final 4-1 on aggregate. They will face either Chelsea or Real Madrid in Istanbul later this month.

Riyad Mahrez struck the second goal in last week’s 2-1 win at the Parc des Princes.

And it was the former Leicester star who was the hero again in the second leg.

Mahrez gave City an early lead before all but sealing their path to the final in the second half.

Ferdinand heaped praise on half of City’s outfield players in his post-match analysis, with special mentions for defenders Ruben Dias and John Stones, as well as England star Phil Foden.

“Totally dominant, dominant display,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“They’ve failed on many occasions in knockout football in the Champions League and we were wondering if it’s a step too far for this team.

“I thought the 45 minutes in Paris, the second half, was a pivotal moment. We said it before and it proved again.

“They carried that same momentum into this game, totally dominated.

“Dias and Stones at the back were impenetrable, and Foden and Mahrez I thought were fantastic going forward.

“Fernandinho the captain today put in a real sterling performance at 36 years of age. Every man played their part today, fantastic performance.

“Great, great performance from this very, very good top team.”

PSG had Angel Di Maria sent off for a reckless kick out at Fernandinho late one.

Mahrez says his side did not start the match as well as they would have liked but was delighted with the outcome.

“It was a very good game,” Mahrez said.

“We didn’t start good again, I don’t think we had a very good first-half but then we scored the goal.

“Then we were more comfortable after the goal and in the second-half, we played very good and we could have scored more.

“They lost their nerves and then they started kicking us, they had a red card and then it was more comfortable for us.

“When you play a semi-final of the Champions League, you have to be solid. Everyone has to contribute defensively and that’s what we did. We were very solid today, we didn’t concede much and that’s why we’re in the final.

“It’s good, we have another game on Saturday and we have to win to be champions then we will focus on the Champions League.”
