Pep Guardiola’s side are bidding to defend the title and win the English top-flight for the fifth time in six seasons.

Man City have made a strong start to the 2022-23 campaign, amassing 29 points from their opening 12 league games.

City are currently top of the Premier League but Arsenal will reclaim that spot if they beat Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Tottenham recovered from successive league defeats to complete a comeback win at Bournemouth on Saturday and stay third, two points above fourth-placed Newcastle United, who continue to impress under Eddie Howe.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have only taken two points from their last three games to slip out of the top-four places, with Manchester United able to move above Graham Potter’s side if they beat West Ham on Sunday evening.

Fulham and Brighton are currently seventh and eighth respectively, ahead of struggling Liverpool who have won just a third of their league games this season.

Despite Liverpool’s issues, Mahrez expects Jurgen Klopp’s side to challenge for the title this season and says the current top-six should also be viewed as contenders.

‘This season I think Arsenal are very good,’ Mahrez told Manchester City’s official website. ‘All of the top six really.

‘Even Liverpool, they are away from us at the moment, but I still think they can be there at the end of the season. All the top six [and Liverpool] can challenge us for the Premier League and all of the other trophies.’

While Mahrez expects Liverpool to challenge for trophies this season, Reds boss Klopp says his side will struggle to finish in the top-four unless they improve.

‘You can’t qualify for the Champions League if you play as inconsistently as we do at the moment,’ Klopp said after Liverpool’s shock defeat to Leeds United. ‘We have to fix that.

‘So many things are unlike us in this moment. I am sorry it is like this, but that is the situation. I am not sure how deep you can dig, but we will. It is like it is and we will work on solutions.

‘We have to have a look at this game first, try to understand it a bit more and go from there.’
