Rob McElhenney sends Notts County message from Wrexham Las Vegas party

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney sent a touching message of support to Notts County as the Magpies reached the National League play-off final. County fought back from 2-0 down to beat Boreham Wood 3-2 for a win that seems them into a showdown with Chesterfield at Wembley for the right to join Wrexham in promotion to the Football League – and McElhenney took to social media to express his pleasure.

Wrexham were promoted themselves after a dramatic battle between the Welsh club and Notts County. Despite the Red Dragons clinching promotion, McElhenney admitted he was upset that their season-long rivals wouldn’t be immediately joining them in League Two – but the Magpies hopes are still alive.

Wrexham were told by their Hollywood owners an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas was on the cards if they returned to the Football League, which they achieved with a record 111 points tally. As a result, the team boarded a 10-hour flight last Thursday to celebrate.

The likes of Ben Foster, Liam McAlinden, Ryan Barnett, Eoghan O’Connell, Sam Dalby, Ollie Palmer, Max Cleworth, Paul Mullin and the rest of the squad are enjoying their time in Nevada – but McElhenney took a break from the festivities to message Notts County. He took to Twitter to write: “I [heart] football. Congrats @Official_NCFC”

Notts County advanced to the final after an injury-time winner took the game to extra time, and than a goal in the final second of the constest sealed a dramatic comeback win. Meanwhile, Wrexham players have been enjoying their time on the Las Vegas strip.

The team’s entire squad posted for a group picture while holding cardboard signs of the club’s letters and logo on a sunny day. Elliot Lee was seen enjoying a drink next to the Wet Republic Ultra Pool at the MGM Grand on Friday with teammate Eoghan O’Connell.

O’Connell, Lee and Thomas O’Connor joined their other teammates in going to Omnia – a tri-level club inside Caesars Palace. Ryan Barnett also took a pic with Foster as they enjoyed the pool. While trendy restaurant Hakkasan, located at the MGM Grand, welcomed the whole squad with a message of congratulations.

Back in November 2020, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds teamed with McElhenney – famed for creating and starring in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ – to purchase Wrexham for £2.25m. The duo have become symbols of Welsh football around the world thanks to the exposure their platforms have bought to the club and area, largely though the popular Disney+ documentary titled ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

The all-expenses extravaganza in Las Vegas comes just days after thousands of fans took the streets in the Welsh town for the open-top bus parade. Both McElhenney and Reynolds were in attendance, with the latter skipping the Met Gala to attend.

With the growing popularity of Wrexham in the United States, players can expect a warm welcome during their trip to Las Vegas as well as on the pre-season tour. Reynolds and McElhenney have arranged four friendlies in July for games against Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United as well as LA Galaxy II and one unconfirmed team.
