Romelu Lukaku named Man City MOTM in Champions League final win over Inter Milan

Romelu Lukaku has been named Manchester City’s man of the match by fans in their Champions League final win over Inter Milan. Supporters brutally mocked the striker on social media after his cameo off the bench in Istanbul.

City have completed a historic treble thanks to a solitary Rodri goal in the second half. Inter were resolute until the Spanish midfielder remained composed to powerfully place an effort past Andre Onana.

Lukaku had come on to replace Edin Dzeko in the 57th minute, just 11 minutes before City took the lead. And the Chelsea loanee’s performance was ridiculed by many on Twitter.

The 30-year-old was involved in two huge moments which led to City’s victory. Lukaku first inadvertently blocked a Federico Dimarco header from going in.

Dimarco first saw a looped effort come off the crossbar before a headed rebound which Lukaku accidentally got in the way of before it crossed the line. The ex-Manchester United star then missed a glorious chance in the closing stages.

With 88 minutes on the clock, Lukaku had a glaring opportunity to equalise for Inter. He had a header from inside the six-yard box but somehow missed, with City goalkeeper Ederson keeping it out with an instinctive save.

And supporters were quick to mock Lukaku by naming him City’s man of the match. A tweet from @robby_mboy read: “Lukaku MOTM” with some crying with laughter emojis.

@ronahhhhhhh wrote: “lukaku motm for city”, while @masuksoerga put: “Lukaku MOTM (for City).”

It was a familiar theme after the final whistle was blown. @_h3rbzzz wrote: “Manchester City supporters trying to pick their MOTM: Ederson, Rodri or Lukaku.”

While @andy_general put: “Lukaku or Ederson MOTM for Citeh…not sure which one.”

Former City midfielder Steve McManaman was on co-commentary duty for BT Sport. And he was shocked that Lukaku missed the late chance.

He said: “Oh my word. I don’t know how he even knew he saved it, I think it just bounced off his leg.

“Lukaku with the header back from [Robin] Gosens – point blank range. How has he missed this? It’s just bounced off his knee. That is incredible. How has he not scored from there, Lukaku? What a moment for him in an Inter shirt.”

Lukaku’s future remains uncertain as his Inter loan is set to expire at the end of this month. Reports claim he wants to stay at the San Siro but still has three years left on his Chelsea contract.
