Romeo Lavia ‘picks Chelsea over Liverpool’ as Jurgen Klopp misses out again

Romeo Lavia has reportedly snubbed Liverpool’s approach and decided to join Chelsea. While Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino got their respective sides ready for the Premier League opening weekend, both clubs were going head-to-head for midfield recruits behind the scenes.

Liverpool were seen as the frontrunners for Lavia for most of the summer until Chelsea popped up with a surprise bid last week. Chelsea’s approach appeared to pique Lavia’s interest with Liverpool left fighting for a new agreement with Southampton.

The Reds ended up agreeing a £60million package with Southampton on Monday for the signing of Lavia. But that was still dependent on how Chelsea and Lavia would react to Liverpool’s agreement.

It’s now claimed that Lavia has decided on a switch to Chelsea over Liverpool in another bitter blow for Jurgen Klopp.

According to The Athletic, Lavia has already made it clear to Liverpool that he wants to join Chelsea. His preference of a move to Stamford Bridge follows news of Moises Caicedo also joining Chelsea in a record £115m move.

It’s said that Chelsea’s move for Lavia will likely cost £50m plus add-ons and the deal could be sealed this week. It also leaves Liverpool having to look for alternative targets with just a few weeks left in the transfer market.

Klopp has now had back-to-back summers where he’s missed out on his top midfield target. Just 12 months ago, Liverpool were strongly interested in a move for Aurelien Tchouameni before the Frenchman opted for Real Madrid.

It’s been suggested the Reds are still keeping an eye on the 23-year-old, who played the full 90 minutes for Real Madrid in their season-opening match at the weekend. Tchouameni reportedly has no desire to leave the Bernabeu any time soon and wants to hold down his future at Real.

Liverpool have been linked with other midfielders in the past, such as Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella and Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
