Romeo Lavia has rejected Liverpool in favour of securing a move to Chelsea in another huge blow to Jurgen Klopp’s transfer plans, according to reports.

The Southampton midfielder has been intensely pursued by both clubs during the summer, but has chosen to join Chelsea in a deal worth roughly £50m, as reported by the Athletic.

It was previously believed that Liverpool had won the race for the midfielders signature after agreeing a £60m fee with Southampton, £10m over the south coast side’s asking price.

However, Lavia appears to be in charge of his own future and prefers a move to London and Stamford Bridge rather than Liverpool.

The announcement will come as deja vu horror to Liverpool supporters who also previously missed out on Moises Caicedo to Chelsea, despite Klopp stating that a deal had been agreed with Brighton.

Lavia’s decision shouldn’t take Liverpool by surprise this time with the Anfield club aware of his preference to finalise a deal with Chelsea instead.

The 19-year-old midfielder is set to make the switch from the Championship back to the Premier League with Chelsea now confident the deal with go through with ease given the positive relationship between the clubs.

Lavia – a Belgian international – enjoyed a breakthrough season in the English top-flight, making 29 Premier League appearances, but was unable to help steer the Saints clear of the drop zone.

A move to Liverpool would have handed Klopp’s midfield a huge boost with the Reds lacking in numbers after brining in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai but seeing Jordan Henderson and Fabinho leave for Saudi Arabia.

The Reds previously had three bids rejected for the Saints youngster before finally striking a deal that would have been enough to secure the player’s transfer.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s interest peaked in the recent days and they entered the driving seat after holding positive discussions with Southampton and the player.

Lavia joined Southampton last season from Manchester City after impressing during his formative years in the academy at the reigning Premier League champions.
