The Red Devils ended their six-year trophy drought with a comfortable 2-0 win at Wembley against the Magpies.
Casemiro put his side ahead with a thumping header, before Sven Botman scored an own goal via a Marcus Rashford effort.
Erik ten Hag’s side sat back in the second half as they sought to hit Newcastle on the counter, knowing all too well that the Magpies would have to flood forward in search of a route back into the game.
With Eddie Howe’s side frustrated in their efforts to do so, Manchester United had chances aplenty to put the game to bed.
No opportunity was bigger than the one that came Fernandes’ way in the final minute, when he raced through on goal and cut back, only to see his effort saved by Loris Karius.

Fernandes ignored Jadon Sancho and Scott McTominay in order to shoot himself, when a pass would likely have resulted in a third goal.
Casemiro told Fernandes as much after the victory, and the pair could be seen half-jokingly arguing about the incident.
The ‘argument’ was caught by SkySports cameras and Keane said he ‘liked’ the fact the pair were arguing.
Speaking over pictures of Fernandes and Casemiro bickering, Keane asked: Are they arguing there?
‘I like that, I like it, whatever they’re arguing about, it means they care.’
