Sheffield United’s Lundstram set for January transfer amid contract snub fury

Chris Wilder is "baffled and frustrated" with John Lundstram for refusing to sign a new improved contract – and will try to sell him in January.

Lundstram, 26, is likely to “run down” the last few months of his contract with Rangers and West Ham interested in landing him on a cut price deal.

Wilder could freeze Lundstram out of the first team and concentrate on the players who have committed their futures to the club. He remains in the 25 man squad.

Wilder said: “It has been frustrating for me personally. I wanted John to stop here. We have discussed for a few months about him stopping.

“We have offered him an attractive contract, up there with the top players at the club.

“I will move on and not think too much about it. I will concentrate on players who want to sign here. Fleck, Stevens, Norwood, new players, Egan Basham, Sharp. It is a very good offer. John and his agent want to negotiate elsewhere.

Asked if he would be picked, Wilder added: “I have to think hard about it and I am frustrated. John should have signed it. Players have committed to us. Should I be beside those, or a player who has not committed?

“We will invite offers for a good young player who did well in his first season in the Premier League.

“He is still a Sheffield United player and available for selection. We are coming into a period where it is straightforward, He runs down his contract, that is not ideal for us.

“We try to recoup some value in the January window which is obviously the best option for Sheffield United. Or that he signs that new improved contract. Which won't happen, which is unfortunate.

“He obviously believes we’re not giving him the money he is worth, or there is a club waiting there on a free transfer.”

The Blades face Manchester City with just one point from six games and are second bottom of the Premier League.

Wilder added: “We have to go again quickly. This is why we want to be in this division.

“Every team is after a bit of fortune. You are after everyone playing at the top of their game, because the gulf is incredible from where Man City are to where Sheff United are as a football club.”
