Jonjo Shelvey has hit out at former owner Mike Ashley for a lack of investment following the sale of Newcastle to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.

Fans of the northeast club went into raptures on Thursday afternoon when it was announced that a takeover had been finalised for the sale of the Magpies to a consortium financially backed by the Saudis.

With a wealth over 10 times greater than current Premier League champions Manchester City, the new Newcastle owners are hungry for success.

The consortium can take hope from the successful model laid down by the Citizens. They themselves were taken over by Sheikh Mansour in 2008 who invested heavily into the club.

And investment is something Newcastle are desperate for after 14 years of scraping by under Mike Ashley.

Magpies midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has slammed the previous owner for a lack of financial backing.

"In terms of the set-up, we all know the training-ground facilities are below par when it comes to Premier League standards," Shelvey told the Daily Mail.

"As players, we’ve got on with it and we’ve had to deal with that to the best of our ability. The money just hasn’t been there. That was hard to accept.

"But the money will be there now. I understand you can’t go spending so much straight away, and it will be a long process, but it’s one that this club and the fans deserve.

"This club can achieve anything it wants now; the sky is the limit."

Following the announcement of the £300m takeover, Newcastle fans are already getting excited about the January transfer window and which forward-thinking manager they can attract.

Despite yet to win a match this season, there is mass optimism on Tyneside and Toon supporters are already throwing their name in the hat for players like Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.

But Shelvey is asking for patience when it comes to player arrivals saying the club won't undergo an instant transformation:

"This is unbelievable for the club," says the 29-year-old. "The fans have been asking for this for a very long time. It’s great news for them.

"I understand what the fans want – they want Mbappe and Messi. All I can say is, that won’t come overnight, we have to be realistic."
