Shola Shoretire ‘let go by Man City for Barcelona trial’ before joining Man Utd

Manchester United wonderkid Shola Shoretire made his senior debut for the club on Sunday in the Red Devils' 3-1 win over Newcastle, but things could have been much different for the youngster.

Shoretire spent time in the Manchester City academy when he was younger, according to the Daily Mail.

However, a family holiday to Spain ended up with him being released by the Citizens, only for United to pounce and snap him up.

City officials were apparently furious with Shoretire for having a trial with Barcelona while out on holiday.

The Daily Mail claims City academy staff members decided against keeping him on their books after the trial.

Shoretire went on to progress through the United academy, and was rewarded with a first-team debut on Sunday.

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are both said to have declared an interest in him prior to signing a professional contract.

His contract, which was signed just after he turned 17 last month, is reportedly one of the biggest for a player his age in club history.

Having been signed as a ten-year-old, Shoretire was previously at Newcastle United after being released by City.

Big things are expected of the left winger, who came on as a last-minute substitute against the Magpies.

Speaking after the game, Shoretire expressed that he wants to follow in the footsteps of Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford by establishing himself in the senior side.

The English wonderkid said: "I was nervous but I worked really hard to get here for this moment so I just wanted to do the best I could.

"Hopefully it’s just the start. I’m going to keep working hard in training, keeping my head down and keeping humble and just looking forward to playing more.

"Looking at people like Marcus and Mason, they’ve come through the same thing I have, through the academy, it shows the coaches are doing a really good job."
