Southampton are pushing through a £7million deal for Mislav Orsic from Dinamo Zagreb.
The deal hit a snag this week over the fee but the Premier League strugglers increased their offer and the Croatia international, 30, began his medical on Thursday.
Nathan Jones’ side are bottom of the Premier League with just one win in their last 13 top flight games and are in need of arrivals to boost their survival bid.
Mislav Orsic began his medical ahead of a £7million move to Southampton on Thursday
Orsic has scored 13 goals and provided eight assists across 27 appearances in all competitions this season.
He is perhaps best known to English sides for his hat-trick against Tottenham to dump them out of the Europa League in 2020.
The 30-year-old also scored at West Ham in the Europa League last season, and netted the winner against Chelsea in their Champions League opener this season – Thomas Tuchel’s last game in charge.
Southampton have made enquiries over a number of other players during the January transfer window.
Nathan Jones is looking to add to his squad to boost their hopes of Premier League survival
It was previously reported that they made enquiries over the signing of Villarreal winger Nicolas Jackson.
Jackson, 21, who has scored twice in 14 LaLiga appearances this season, is wanted on an initial loan but would cost the club over £20million.
They have also been keen on Lorient forward Terem Moffi who is third in the Ligue 1 scoring charts with ten goals in 14 appearances.
The Athletic have also reported that they are exploring the possibility of moving for Everton’s Michael Keane to shore up their leaky defence in the January window.
