Manchester United legend Paul Parker claims England manager Gareth Southgate has disrespected Erik ten Hag with his selection of Harry Maguire. The former right-back says there is no way the Red Devils defender should have been picked for the latest Three Lions squad.
Maguire continues to be out of favour at United. Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are the preferred centre-back pairing for Southgate.
Southgate took Maguire to the World Cup in Qatar and he performed well en route to the quarter-final stage. But struggles at club level have continued.
Parker, who won two Premier League titles at United, says Martinez was trying to help Maguire through last Sunday’s FA Cup win over Fulham. He claims the Argentine was telling his team-mate he was defending too deep.

Parker says Maguire is yet to adapt to the style of football Ten Hag wants to play at United. And he thinks his lack of action will eventually cost him on the international stage.
Parker told BonusCodeBets: “He hasn’t played regularly for a long time now and he is struggling defensively every time he gets the opportunity to play. Martinez was clearly telling him in the previous game that he was defending too deep and I don’t get how he can’t understand how Erik ten Hag wants to play.
“I think that Gareth Southgate has disrespected Erik ten Hag by picking Harry Maguire to the national team. It is very disrespectful and a completely wrong decision.
“Erik ten Hag has made it clear that he is not good enough for Man United, so how can he be good enough to play for the national team? It makes no sense. He shouldn’t have been picked for the national team.

“Yeah, he has done okay for England but at some point, it will go wrong. You need games behind you and you need to know that it’s justified that you are on the national team.”
Southgate defended his selection of Maguire last week. He claimed the former Leicester star was one of England’s best players in Qatar.
Southgate said: “Harry has got two World Cup winners currently ahead of him in the (United) team and that’s the benchmark. He dealt with it brilliantly in Qatar.
“His performances were exceptional. He had a lot of pressure going into those games because the spotlight was on him, but he was, without doubt, one of our best players in the tournament.”
