Steve Bruce to ask Mike Ashley for another big-money Newcastle signing

Steve Bruce is set to ask Mike Ashley for another big-money Newcastle signing to bolster the team in crunch transfer meeting

  • Steve Bruce is set to meet Newcastle owner Mike Ashley for transfer talks
  • It will be the first time Ashley has visited Newcastle’s training base since August
  • He last stopped by to meet £40m record signing Joelinton, who has scored once
  • Bruce will tell Ashley he needs to sanction another big transfer for the Magpies

Steve Bruce will tell Mike Ashley he needs to sanction another big-money signing if he is to improve Newcastle’s team, with the owner expected on Tyneside for a belated transfer summit.

Supporters have reacted with frustration after Bruce revealed that Ashley will make his first visit to the training ground since August and they are questioning why a meeting was not arranged sooner.

The pair will discuss potential incomings after a run of one point from four matches has left the injury-ravaged Magpies looking over their shoulder.

Steve Bruce will tell owner Mike Ashley to sanction another big name signing this month

Newcastle’s injury-ravaged squad have taken just one point from their last four matches

Ashley has always invested in January should he feel the club’s Premier League status is in jeopardy – he signed off £21m Miguel Almiron 12 months ago – and his decision to call a meeting with Bruce is telling.

But the head coach believes it will take a significant sum to make any deal worthwhile and they have already turned down the offer of Everton striker Cenk Tosun, who has now joined Crystal Palace on loan.

‘Mike was very supportive in the summer and if there is somebody out there who can improve us – and that’s the key – I will ask him the question,’ said Bruce.

He last visited to see £40m record signing Joelinton, who has struggling for form recently

‘If you just try and bring in bodies then it’s pointless. Almiron is the type of signing we need. If there’s another similar kid out there, let’s see if we can get them.’

Bruce was accused of being Ashley’s ‘puppet’ by fans after his appointment in July, but he added: ‘I certainly don’t want to be labelled that puppet thing again. For me, to take the club forward is all that I want to try and do.

‘I’d rather sacrifice myself than take us down this road where I say, “Wow, we’ve got five or six injuries, we need five or six players”. We want a bit of quality to take this club forward. If that takes a bit of time, it will have to take a bit of time.’

Bruce suggests the team needs another player like last January’s signing Miguel Almiron

Ashley’s last trip to the North East was to meet £40million club-record signing Joelinton, but he has scored just once and has now gone 20 games without a goal.

The Brazilian is expected to start at home to Rochdale in Tuesday’s FA Cup third-round replay, and Bruce has told him to take the chance to end his drought.

‘One of the reasons we played him against Rochdale the first time was to see if he could score a goal,’ said Bruce.

‘We need to get him used to scoring goals again.’
