Suarez cried ahead of his Atletico debut as he opens up on Messi ‘suffering’

Luis Suarez has admitted he was left in tears by Barcelona’s treatment as he completed his dramatic transfer to Atletico Madrid.

After six seasons at the Camp Nou, the La Liga giants decided it was time to move on from the Uruguayan, selling him to rivals Atleti.

Suarez was forced to train away from the first-team squad ahead of his move and revealed that treatment took its toll on him.

Lionel Messi, who attempted to negotiate a Barca exit himself, has been highly critical of the treatment of Suarez, suggesting he deserved better.

In a post on Instagram, Messi wrote: "It will be strange to see you with another shirt and much more to face you.

"You deserved to be fired for what you are: one of the most important players in the club's history, achieving important things both as a group and individually.

"And not to get kicked out like they did. But the truth is that at this point nothing surprises me. I wish you all the best in this new challenge.

"I love you very much, I love you very much. See you soon friend."

Suarez has suggested Messi’s response came as no surprise, as he knew the suffering he had gone through in his final weeks in Catalonia.

He told Sport: “I had been in Barcelona for 6 years and there were other ways of talking to me, telling me that the club was planning to change its scene … but the ways were not good and that also bothered Leo . He knows what we have suffered and how bad it was at that time.

“I was not surprised that Messi supported me publicly because I know him too well. I already knew the pain he felt, how he said it and how I said it. The forms, the feeling that they are throwing you that is what hurts the most.

"Those days, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, until the time for the debut, were very complicated,” Suarez added. "I cried for what I was having to live. I did not take very well the messages from the club that they were looking for a solution to change of scene.”

Suarez has put that difficult ending to life at Barcelona behind him, netting two times in his first three La Liga apperances for Atleti.
