Thomas Partey to Arsenal transfer may depend on future of one Gunners star

Arsenal may only be able to sign Thomas Partey this summer if they can sell striker Alexandre Lacazette, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth. Atletico Madrid midfielder Partey has been linked with a move to Arsenal throughout this transfer window. The 27-year-old has a £45million release clause in his contract that the Gunners, as of yet, have not been prepared to activate.

Arsenal may not be able to afford Partey unless they sell one of their top assets in Lacazette.

French striker Lacazette was wanted by Atletico before he joined Arsenal in 2017 and has been linked again in recent months.

Sheth says there is a possibility a swap deal could be negotiated which sees Partey move to Arsenal and Lacazette in the opposite direction.

But Arsenal must make a decision on Lacazette’s future soon, with his contract expiring in under two years.

“This has the makings of one of the busiest transfer windows for Arsenal in recent years,” Sheth said on The Transfer Show.

“There’s one name that’s been banded around throughout this transfer window and it’s the Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.

“He remains a player, we think, Arsenal are interested in. He’s got a release clause believed to be around £45m.

“For Arsenal to be able to spend that much on one player, it’s likely they will need to have a few sales before they can commit £45m.

“Now, we’ve been speaking throughout this week to look out for Alexandre Lacazette and what potentially could happen to him.

“He is a player that could raise funds for Arsenal and there’s even talk of Alexandre Lacazette being part of a deal where he would go to Atletico Madrid as part of a deal that would bring Thomas Partey to the Emirates.

“If a new deal [at Arsenal] is not forthcoming, this basically is the last realistic chance that Arsenal have to get good money for Lacazette.”

Lacazette scored just 12 goals in all competitions for Arsenal last season – his worst goal return in a Gunners shirt.

He has not been able to add to his three goals in 16 caps for France since his last international outing in 2017.
