Thomas Tuchel provides Tammy Abraham injury update after Chelsea beat Newcastle

Thomas Tuchel admits he is ‘worried’ about Tammy Abraham’s injury after he hobbled off during Chelsea’s victory over Newcastle United.

England international Abraham started Chelsea’s Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge on Monday night but was replaced by Olivier Giroud after 20 minutes.

The 23-year-old looked in some discomfort following a challenge from Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles and was unable to continue.

Asked about Abraham’s condition, Tuchel said: ‘It’s serious enough he had to go out and we worry about him and hopefully he will not miss to many matches.’

First-half goals from Giroud and Timo Werner saw Tuchel’s Chelsea beat struggling Newcastle 2-0.

Chelsea were ninth when Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager but the club are now fourth with 14 matches of the 2020-21 season remaining.

Tuchel added: ‘Top four is the target and stays the target, there are many team behind us chasing.

‘We had many points to recover and it stays a big challenge because many games are coming. We are going to play teams from the top and bottom, every game is difficult and we will keep fighting.’

Chelsea continue their Premier League campaign on Saturday with a trip to Southampton.
