Chelsea forward Timo Werner suffered another embarrassing setback on Wednesday night as he missed a sitter in Germany's 2-1 defeat against North Macedonia.

The defeat was the first time Germany have lost a World Cup qualifying match since 2001, and Werner had the perfect opportunity to prevent it.

Having come on for Chelsea team-mate Kai Havertz before the hour mark, Werner was tasked with levelling the game following a stunning Macedonia opener.

With ten minutes to go, however, he was left in space in the middle of the area and played the ball on a plate by Ilkay Gundogan.

However, the forward – who is clearly suffering from a lack of confidence – attempted to pass the ball home with his weaker left foot.

But he made a poor connection with the ball, which bobbled off his standing right foot and dribbled out of touch for a goal kick.

Werner immediately sank to his feet – as did Gundoguan – and was visibly distraught.

The miss was just the latest in a series of high-profile blunders for the £53million man, who has struggled since joining Chelsea.

But with rumours of a summer bid for Erling Haaland, Chelsea fans have begun to lose patience with the new signing.

One Chelsea fan wrote: "I don't want to hear any more excuses about Timo Werner's confidence. There’s been a stark difference in the way Tammy and Werner have been treated this season. I’m not turning on Timo yet, I just want Tammy to get the opportunities and respect he deserves!

"He’s missed many, many chances like this already this season. For all the other things Timo does do well, Tammy is far more effective and lethal in the box, and if we’re talking about the CF position, I’d have him over Werner in my team every day of the week."

Another wrote: "People act like Werner has only started missing chances recently. Even at Leipzig he missed a lot but their system was tailored for him so inevitably he’d score a lot too despite missing big chances."

"I have officially given up on Timo Werner," another wrote.
