Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou eyeing Celtic reunion to replace injured Perisic

Mikel Arteta previews Spurs clash and discusses Martin Odegaard's new deal

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou is eyeing a surprise reunion with former Celtic winger Jota amid his disastrous spell in Saudi Arabia, according to reports. The Lilywhites are on the hunt for attacking reinforcements after losing Ivan Perisic to a long-term injury.

On Wednesday, Tottenham confirmed that Perisic looked set to miss the rest of the campaign through an ACL injury.

A club statement read: “We can confirm that Ivan Perisic has suffered a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee.

“The experienced Croatia international sustained the injury in non-contact training and will undergo surgery.

“Ivan will then commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff and is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season.”

Postecoglou’s search for potential options to replace the 34-year-old has seen a familiar face emerge on Spurs’ radar for the January transfer window.

According to the Mirror, Jota’s calamitous summer move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad has left the Aussie boss on red alert.

Postecoglou allegedly wants to recruit a new forward and is interested in reigniting his relationship with Jota after enjoying success together at Celtic.

The 24-year-old winger registered 11 goals and 11 assists in the Scottish Premiership last term, helping Postecoglou guide Celtic to a domestic treble.

He surprisingly left Celtic Park to join the Saudi revolution in July, completing a £25million switch to Al-Ittihad.

But former Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo excluded Jota from his Saudi Pro League squad, which could only include eight of Al-Ittihad’s nine overseas signings.

It has left the Portuguese ace ineligible for league fixtures, restricting him to AFC Champions League and Club World Cup games.

Naturally unhappy, Jota has reportedly requested the termination of his contract so he can continue his club career with regular football elsewhere.

Espirito Santo has rebuffed his pleas, viewing him as a long-term recruit. However, the prospect of a winter transfer will likely increase if tensions rise while he’s made to watch from the wings.

Postecoglou has alternative options for the coming months as he looks to return Tottenham Hotspur to the Champions League with a top-four finish.

New club captain Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison have been the 58-year-old’s preferred front three in the opening stages of the campaign.

Brennan Johnson, Manor Solomon, Bryan Gil and Alejo Veliz are other options at his disposal, with Spurs’ absence from all European competition making for a less demanding fixture schedule.
