Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy should only bring Mauricio Pochettino back to the club if he is prepared to spend big in the transfer market, according to former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara. Pochettino is linked with a sensational return to Tottenham just 18 months after being sacked.

Pochettino is currently the manager at Paris Saint-Germain after replacing Thomas Tuchel in early January.

However, recent reports say the Argentine is willing to leave PSG to return to north London.

Pochettino failed to win Ligue 1 with PSG and saw his side crash out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage.

O’Hara does not understand why the 49-year-old would want to take a “backward step” to rejoin Spurs.

“I think it would be a good idea because he’s been a great manager for Spurs,” O’Hara said on talkSPORT.

“I think it was when we were playing our best football and our best period.

“I don’t understand why he would leave PSG because I think it’s a backward step, going back to Spurs.

“But he obviously does love the club and he’s always said that he’s got unfinished business.

“I think if they can make it happen, Daniel Levy has got the fans and the people back on side.”

However, O’Hara says it should only happen if Levy is prepared to back Pochettino in the summer window.

Tottenham finished the Premier League campaign in seventh, outside the Champions League and Europa League qualification spots.

There is also huge doubt over the future of top-scorer Harry Kane.

O’Hara added: “What you do have to do is you have to back him. You can’t bring him back and not back him.

“We all know he got rid of Pochettino, Jose Mourinho came in and it still didn’t work.

“So I think everyone has now come to the conclusion that it’s not the managers, it’s the players.

“The club needs a rebuild, it needs a revamp, it needs new players to come in. There needs to be a six or seven overhaul of players.

“I think if Pochettino does come back, and you are going to go back to your previous manager, you’ve got to give him the money to go out and build the team that he’s always said that he needed to do.”
