Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard could snub a free move to Tottenham at the end of the season as he would apparently prefer to move abroad. The England international looks set to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires this summer.

Lingard has made 226 appearances for the Red Devils and was once a regular in the starting line-up.

But with United possessing an embarrassment of riches in attack, he has found his game time limited in recent years.

Last season he was shipped out to West Ham on loan for the second half of the season.

And his move coincided with a purple patch of form as he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 matches for the Hammers.

The 29-year-old reportedly turned down a permanent move to the London Stadium after being given assurances by former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he would be given more opportunities during this campaign.

But Lingard has been a peripheral figure once again at Old Trafford this season.

He has played just 106 minutes of Premier League football this term and is yet to make a single top-flight start.

In January he was tipped to join mega-rich Newcastle United.

But the move broke down and he looks set to run down his contract before cutting ties with the club he’s been at since the age of seven.

According to football.london, Tottenham have spoken to Lingard’s representatives about moving to north London in the summer.

But there have been indications that he may prefer to move overseas.

Lingard came on for the final eight minutes of his side’s Premier League draw with Southampton at the weekend but didn’t feature in their victory over Brighton on Tuesday night.

The ace could be just one of a whole host of players set to leave the north west side in a few months’ time, with Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata also coming to the end of their current deals.

And former England striker Alan Shearer slammed the 13-times Premier League champions this week for their wasteful attitude.

“As things stand, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, who both featured against Southampton, are due to leave for nothing this summer which means, what, £130million of talent flushed down the toilet,” Shearer said.

“Free transfers happen, but here it feels like a form of negligence or self-harm.”

If Spurs do miss out on signing Lingard, it will come as a bitter blow to boss Antonio Conte.

The Italian is looking to build an exciting team at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – and Lingard is a player who has proved he can cut it with the best in the country.
