Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a setback in their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic. The Bosnian international only moved to the La Liga giants one year ago as part of a swap deal for Arthur, but could now be heading back to his former club Juventus.

Barcelona are in serious financial trouble ahead of the new season and Pjanic will be allowed to leave Camp Nou this summer as the club attempts to significantly reduce its wage bill.

Ronald Koeman’s side are believed to have transfer listed a number of unwanted first-team stars and could even allow Pjanic to depart on a free transfer.

This news has alerted Tottenham in recent weeks, who are interested in completing a deal for the 31-year-old.

Spurs’ new managing director Fabio Paratici could play a key role in this move taking place, having been involved in Juventus’ £24.5million capture of Pjanic in 2016.

This past connection may not be enough for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, however, as Mundo Deportivo have reported that Pjanic is willing to take a pay cut to return to Turin.

The experienced midfielder added to the idea that he could well be on his way back to Juventus after he liked a post on social media by an Italian journalist which claimed Pjanic is hoping for a return to Serie A.

Whether or not Massimiliano Allegri’s side end up making their move could depend on the club’s attempts to recruit Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli.

Locatelli shone at Euro 2020 for Italy and has now attracted interest from a number of top clubs, including Arsenal.

The Gunners are working to get a deal done, though several reports have suggested that the 23-year-old is only interested in a move to Juventus and is holding out for that to happen.

As for Spurs’ recruitment plans aside from Pjanic, Nuno described the process of strengthening as “not an easy job” but admitted that work is being done to add value to the team.

“Anything can happen in football, it happens so fast,” said the Spurs boss.

“This transfer window has been different because of the Euros, because of the struggles of the pandemic, all these things have delayed things.

“Us as a club are aware and working on a daily basis because we have to be ready on a daily basis to react if it’s necessary. Improving our squad is not an easy job and we have to be really accurate and clinical on who we bring.”
