Tottenham have been warned that boss Antonio Conte’s contract situation is preventing Harry Kane and Son Heung-min from committing their futures to the club. The England captain has been linked with a move away from north London, as his current deal expires in 2024.
The Italian coach is only under contract until the end of the current season, and the two parties do not appear close to agreeing on an extension while there have been rumours linking Conte back to jobs in Italy, particularly Juventus.
Former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood believes that the uncertainty around Conte’s future is preventing the club from getting their star men to sign new contracts. “Let’s face it, he [Conte] only has until the end of the season,” Sherwood told Sky Sports.
“I mean he’s not signed a new contract. You are asking Harry Kane and Son to extend their contracts, why would you extend your contract? If you believe in this manager, if your manager is going to be there until the end of the season.

“You have to make a decision on him, soon. There is speculation of him going back to Italy. He is lauded in Italy for the style of how he wants to play. This year he has to win, if he doesn’t win this year, then he will leave.”
Conte has remained calm over talks to extend his contract at the club. Earlier this month there were reports claiming that Spurs were in talks to make Conte the highest-paid head coach in the league, but the Italian has played down talk of a new deal. “I said in the past, I didn’t need another contract to be sure to stay in a club,” Conte said last month.

“Also, for the club, it’s a good investment to have a coach like my staff and me. I think at the right time, I will take the best decision. At this moment, I’m really happy. I don’t want to push the club about the situation because it’s not the right time. We have just started the season and we have a long time to live together and to understand, to continue to work together.”
While Kane’s deal is up at the end of next season, Tottenham do have an extra year on Son’s deal after he signed a four-year extension in 2021. Both players have been vital for Conte’s side but there have been rumours linking Kane with a move to Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
Kane previously reiterated that he is only focusing on his current club, but there will be worries at the club until the striker puts pen to paper on a new deal.
