Netherlands star Donny van de Beek has been ruled out of Euro 2020 through injury following a nightmare debut season at Manchester United.
Van de Beek was set to feature for the Netherlands at this summer's delayed tournament, despite being given the cold shoulder by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford last term.
However, the midfielder's poor fortunes have continued on international duty, as an injury has forced him to withdraw from Frank de Boer's Oranje squad just five days out from their opening Euro 2020 fixture against Ukraine.
The Dutch national team have released a statement which reads: "Van de Beek has to let the European Championship pass by. The midfielder is struggling with an injury.
"As a result, he is not available in time for EURO 2020. Frank de Boer will not call a replacement for Van de Beek.
"Get well soon, Donny!"
Van de Beek did not take part in the Netherlands' two warm-up fixtures against Scotland and Georgia due to the problem and has not passed a late fitness test ahead of Sunday's curtain raiser against Ukraine.
It marks a new low point for the 24-year-old after what was a difficult season in Manchester, which has led to talk of a potential United exit less than a year on from his transfer.
Ajax legend Sjaak Swark believes Van de Beek would be the perfect replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum at Liverpool, urging him to make the switch to United's bitter rivals.
"He played really great at Ajax, until he left. He was ready for abroad. But at United they have eight or nine midfielders, and you have to intervene, then that takes time," he told Veronica Inside, as reported by SoccerNews NL.
"You have a midfield with [Paul] Pogba and [Bruno] Fernandes, he is not going to throw that trainer out because they are worth 150 million euros, on paper.

"That's a choice he has to make himself. He feels himself whether he should leave. I'm not worried about him.
"He would fit right in with other clubs. If I look at Liverpool and Wijnaldum is leaving now, he will be a wonderful replacement. Or Thomas Müller, at Bayern Munich."
