  • Manchester United are yet to concede a goal when both players are on the pitch
  • The pair have played 487 minutes without letting one in across ten matches
  • They played the full 90 minutes as United secured a 1-0 win over Wolves

Manchester United pair Raphael Varane and Casemiro are yet to concede a goal in the Premier League this season while on the same pitch – with the duo proving they have been key to the club’s mini-revival.

United are resurgent under Erik ten Hag despite a difficult start to the campaign and the team have won their last three games to give themselves a real chance of finishing in the top four.

The Red Devils clinched a narrow 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday thanks to Marcus Rashford’s strike and Casemiro and Varane both played the full 90 minutes as the team kept a much-needed clean sheet.

And Ten Hag should want the pair to play together as often as possible – considering they have ensured that the team have never let a goal in when they are both in action. The two players have featured together for an incredible 487 minutes and across ten games.

The played fewer games together at the start of the season – with just 16 minutes clocked in their first match against Southampton in August – a 1-0 win – and 15 minutes in the 3-1 victory over Arsenal the following month.

Tellingly, the pair did not feature together at all when United were humbled 6-3 by Man City in October, and for the 3-1 loss to Aston Villa in November, which were their only defeats since turning their fortunes around under the Dutch boss.

The duo have proved to be a key part of a new spine for United as they bid for the top four

They have brought a winning mentality to United after eight trophy-laden years at Real Madrid

Southampton A 0-1 16 mins

Leicester A 0-1 36 mins

Arsenal H 3-1 15 mins

Everton A 1-2 2 mins

Newcastle H 0-0 98 mins

Spurs H 2-0 87 mins

Chelsea A 1-1 60 mins

Forest H 3-0 77 mins

Wolves A 1-0 96 mins

Total minutes: 487

Goals conceded: Zero

It seems Ten Hag has realised that he has a winning formula when the two play as they have started the last five matches together, including 98 minutes in a 0-0 draw with Newcastle, 87 minutes in the 2-0 win over Spurs and 77 minutes in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

Casemiro and Varane know each other well, having spent eight years together at Real Madrid and winning a huge haul of trophies.

They enjoyed four Champions League triumphs during their time at the Bernabeu and also won LaLiga twice – so that winning mentality will be huge for United and their connection is showing already.

Varane signed for United for £50million at the start of last season and did not immediately show his true quality as one of the best centre backs in the world as the club struggled under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

But he has gone from strength to strength in this campaign after being paired with Lisandro Martinez – and having Casemiro in front of him has only added steel to United’s defence.

Casemiro arrived at Old Trafford this summer and cost £70m in a huge coup for the club given his reputation as one of the most highly-rated defensive midfielders.

The Brazilian has started nine times in the Premier League and has earned massive plaudits for his starring displays in the last two wins over Nottingham Forest and Wolves last time out.
