Villarreal earned their second successive 1-0 win since the return of La Liga to move to within two points of the Europa League qualification spots by beating relegation battlers Mallorca at home.

Colombian striker Carlos Bacca pounced at the far post to tap in Samuel Chukwueze’s centre after 16 minutes and condemn the visitors to a second straight defeat following their loss at home to Barcelona on Saturday.

The result left the hosts in seventh, two points behind Atletico Madrid, while Mallorca remained a point shy of safety with a significantly worse goal difference than 17th-placed Celta Vigo.
