Virgil van Dijk calls on Liverpool to sign more 'quality additions'

Virgil van Dijk calls on Liverpool to bring in more ‘quality additions’ to help Jurgen Klopp’s men challenge for the title – as he hails Alexis Mac Allister’s capture as ‘something we need’

  • Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool need to strengthen in the transfer market
  • The centre-back has been impressed with the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister
  • But believes that further ‘quality’ reinforcements are needed by the club

Virgil van Dijk is keen to see more ‘quality’ arrive at Anfield during the summer transfer window after the club endured a disappointing campaign last season.

The centre-back was part of a Liverpool team that failed to qualify for the Champions League and limped to a fifth-placed finish in the English top-flight.

A lack of squad investment was further highlighted by the club’s prolonged injury crisis that extended throughout large periods of the season, however, Liverpool appear to have learnt from their mistakes with their recent capture of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton.

Van Dijk is currently on-duty with the Netherlands national team as he prepares for an upcoming Nations League semi-final with Croatia before embarking on a well-earned break, but has been casting an eye on developments at his club.

The experienced defender raved about Argentina’s World Cup winner Mac Allister when asked about Liverpool’s midfield acquisition.

‘I think he’s a very good player,’ Van Dijk told reporters in his homeland.

‘Obviously we’ve played against him many times, also with Holland against Argentina.

‘I think he definitely will be a big addition and something we need in order to be back where we all want to be,’ he added.

The 31-year-old is viewed as a leader within the Reds camp and his absence in crucial matches last season left Jurgen Klopp with a defensive crisis to sort.

Liverpool shipped 21 more goals (47) than what they did during their 2021-22 campaign (26) with opposition teams inflicting nine defeats.

They eventually finished 22 points adrift of eventual champions Manchester City, who went on to clinch a historic treble consisting of the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.

Van Dijk is keen to see Liverpool return to their title-challenging form that the club have become so accustomed to under Klopp but warned more new signings are needed to do so.

‘So it’s a good start to the transfer window, hopefully we get a couple more quality additions,’ stated Van Dijk.

‘But he’s definitely one of the players that can hopefully make a difference for us in the next couple of years.’
