Wanted ex-Celtic star Anthony Stokes dodged questions about a UK arrest warrant as he enjoyed a picnic in a park in Dublin.

Stokes, 32, is wanted in Scotland after he failed to turn up for a sentencing hearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He admitted last month to bombarding his ex-girlfriend’s dad with offensive text messages.

Hamilton Court Sheriff Allan McKay issued a warrant for Stokes' arrest in June, citing a belief that the footballer would not return to Scotland to face sentencing unless he was forced to do so by police.

On Monday, Stokes was spotted by the IrishDailyStar in Marlay Park in Dublin, enjoying a picnic.

The star smiled as he was asked if he had any comment to make regarding the warrant – but he had little to say.

"I'm not answering any questions. I’ve nothing to speak about. I’m not commenting to you or anyone else," he said.

It was then put to Stokes that he was a figure in the public eye and asking him about the warrant was a fair question.

He said: "It's a fair question but I’ve no comment to make."

The footballer has been in Dublin on trial with League of Ireland club Shamrock Rovers.

He played a behind-closed-doors friendly for them last week – but the club ultimately chose not to sign the striker.

Stokes, who previously admitted to sending offensive text messages to his ex-girlfriend's dad, failed to show up in court for sentencing on June 26.

Court Sheriff McKay said: "The attitude I get is that he frankly does what he wishes and that is not acceptable to me. He should be here and I have an explanation which holds no water.

"He pled guilty and was released on bail and he has now left the country in breach of bail.

"He is not here in breach of his bail conditions and I’m not at all sure that he will come back unless required to do so by some sort of authority — so to do that, I’m issuing a warrant for his arrest."
