West Ham 'open talks with Man United over Scott McTominay'

West Ham ‘open talks with Man United over Scott McTominay but it will require a ‘very big offer’ to prise midfielder away from Old Trafford

  • Scott McTominay has started just 10 Premier League games under Erik ten Hag
  • West Ham are looking for midfielders following the departure of Declan Rice
  • The have made a formal approach to Man United over signing McTominay

West Ham have reportedly held initial talks with Manchester United over the signing of Scott McTominay.

The Hammers are looking to strengthen their midfield following the big money departure of captain Declan Rice to Arsenal earlier this month.

Ans Sky Sports claim they have formally approached United to ascertain a price for McTominay.

The reports adds that the midfielder is seen as an important member of the squad and it would require a ‘very big offer’ for the Red Devils to consider a sale.

There is said to be a gap between United’s valuation and what West Ham are willing to pay.

West Ham have reportedly held initial talks with Man United over Scott McTominay

The Scotland international has found himself bereft of a regular place in the starting XI under Erik ten Hag after the acquisitions of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen last term in the middle of the park.

With the Dutch manager’s continued shake-up at Old Trafford, and a reported desire for improved game time, this summer could therefore prove to be his time to leave the club.

With the club hampered by Financial Fair Play restrictions, they may not be able to sign a direct replacement for McTominay and choose to hold on to the player for at least another year.

At the same time, the lure of some much-needed income could prove too much to turn down, should Ten Hag perhaps identify a player in another position that he is keen to bring in.

The Scot’s contract at Old Trafford is not up until the summer of 2025, and Ten Hag and Co retain the option of extending that by a further year, and as a result they will feel in no rush to sell.

Despite not being able to find a regular place in the first team for McTominay, it is unclear as yet whether Ten Hag will be willing to let the player leave this summer.

Although he made 39 appearances across all competitions as cover in midfield, only 16 of those came from the start, and just 10 in the Premier League.

However, McTominay has admitted that he has enjoyed Ten Hag’s no-nonsense approach to coaching, and how players are challenged to ‘think about new ideas’, saying: ‘Obviously, the transition in terms of his style is very, very different to some other coaches.

‘But, as I say, that’s football. He’s always having you thinking, and having you think about new ideas and stuff like that.

‘It’s good, that’s the best way to be with football. Open-minded and going into every game, if he asks you to do something, you do it to the best of your abilities and you try to learn it as best as you can.’
