West Ham will be hoping to celebrate their 125th anniversary in style after unveiling their retro home jersey for next season.

The design was inspired by the likes of Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst, with the kit mirroring what the trio of legends had sported during the club’s glory years.

The club won the FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup during that decade, and the West Ham legends also helped steer England to World Cup glory in 1966.

The design (modelled by Mark Noble) was inspired by club legends and successes of the past

The claret and blue kit will prove a welcome throwback to the fabled successes of the past for fans.

Umbro had put together the concept, which is completed with a unique anniversary two-colour crest as well as traditional white shorts and socks. The designs were finalised after discussions with supporters.

England star Declan Rice and club captain Mark Noble are just two of the players who have been pictured modelling the new strip.

‘As a boy, my Dad would tell me all about Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, about the Academy of Football and how we were one of the most entertaining teams in the world,’ lifelong West Ham fan Noble said.

‘This kit instantly reminds me of those the legends wore when they won the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

‘While we all want to experience more success in the future, West Ham United is a club that will always remember its past and pay respects to its heritage, and this kit does that perfectly.’

And it appears that a large number of fans have also been left impressed by the jersey.

Pictures surfaced on social media on Monday morning that revealed eager shoppers were left stuck in online queues on the club’s virtual store for over an hour before being able to make the purchase.

But the West Ham support now face an anxious wait to discover whether their heroes will be pulling on the new shirt in the Premier League during the next campaign.

West Ham are battling against relegation after suffering back-to-back defeats since the restart

The club have endured a steady decline in fortunes, and their perilous position in the top flight is a stark contrast to the lifelong memories created during their years of success.

With just seven games of the season remaining, the East London outfit find themselves in 17th place – and teeter above the drop zone on goal difference alone.

The Hammers have also suffered back-to-back defeats against Wolves and Tottenham since the league’s restart.
