Liverpool are said to be keeping tabs on Son Heung-min’s situation at Tottenham ahead of a shock potential switch, according to reports. And if he does end up heading to Anfield, Jurgen Klopp may hold the key to making it happen after holding a brief conversation with the Tottenham star following their match last season.
The teams played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield in May where Son opened the scoring with a fine counter-attacking move, before Luis Diaz equalised late on the second half to share the spoils.
At the final whistle, Klopp could be seen embracing Son and as he grabbed the South Korean for a quick chat, fans believe the Reds boss used the opportunity to lay down the foundations for a possible move.
Spotted by the cameras on the pitch, Klopp is thought by supporters to have said: “Here is special!” referring to the unique atmosphere inside their iconic stadium, Anfield.
Some believe it was the German’s way of beginning the charm offensive to lure Son to Merseyside after watching Son impressively post his best goalscoring season to date in 2021-22, matching Mohamed Salah with 23 goals last term. Klopp is thought to be a huge admirer of the South Korean forward’s talents and has not been shy in speaking about him previously.
Son has been synonymous with the club since arriving in a £23million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 when Mauricio Pochettino in charge. Since then, he has scored 136 goals in 344 appearances for the club and forged a record-breaking partnership with Harry Kane, with over 50 goal combinations between them.
But according to German outlet Sport 1, Son is already planning the next stage of his career, having celebrated his 30th birthday back in July. The South Korean is understood to be willing to leave after seven years with the club to win trophies elsewhere, although it may be difficult to prise him away.

Not only is Spurs chairman Daniel Levy a notoriously difficult negotiator, Son has little leverage to work with as his contract not running out until 2025. It is unlikely that he would make clear his desire to leave public like Kane did, given his close relations with the fanbase.
The report states European giants PSG and Real Madrid would be interested in securing Son’s services too, along with Liverpool, and their financial power may give them a slight edge over the Premier League side.
But Klopp, having lost Diaz to injury and Sadio Mane leaving for Bayern Munich last summer, may be able to convince the Spurs star that silverware is achievable under his tutelage at Liverpool, having won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in his time at the club.
