John Murtough will become Manchester United’s football director, a position which hasn’t existed until now. The club announced he would serve as a superior to the club’s various team managers while also carrying more general responsibilities. However, many people will not have heard of Mr Murtough, who has spent much of his career working in football development.
Who is John Murtough?
Before taking his latest promotion, Mr Murtough served as Manchester United’s head of club development.
He came to his previous role after signing on with the club in 2014 from Everton.
The Liverpool-born development expert has extensive experience with Manchester United players in all their forms, as he helped recruit members for its women’s team in 2018.
His career has spanned 23 years and also saw him act as the Premier League’s head of elite performance after other roles developing on an academy and player level.
Manchester United has outlined what his current job will entail.
Rather than just overseeing the men’s team, Mr Murtough will oversee all football development.
Managers will also keep their responsibilities from before the new director’s promotion.
But the club added Mr Murtough would deal with “day-to-day” matters alongside Mr Solskjaer.
The statement read: “As football director, John will work day-to-day with Ole to align recruitment and other strategies and to ensure that the first team has the best-in-class operational support it needs to succeed.
“Ole will continue his role in the recruitment process, supported by extensive scouting and data analytics functions that will continue to report to John.
“Matt Judge [previously head of corporate development] will also report to John, with a new title of Director of Football Negotiations.”

“John will have overall leadership and responsibility for operations and strategy across all football functions, reinforcing the strong foundations already in place.
“This appointment builds on the work John has already undertaken in recent years, working closely with Ole Gunnar Solskjær and the rest of the football staff to create the structures, processes and culture to deliver sustained success on the pitch.”
Ed Woodward, Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman, said the director’s presence would help ensure club “traditions” of introducing young talent continue.
He branded the new role a “natural evolution” for the club’s leadership.
Mr Murtough also released a statement, hailing an “exciting” time for the club.
He added he was looking forward to working across departments with “outstanding staff”.
He said: “This is such an exciting time for everyone at Manchester United with the first team, academy and women’s team all performing strongly, and plenty of development still to come.
“It’s a privilege to be part of that process, and an honour to lead Manchester United’s football department, working alongside Ole, Casey [Stoney, women’s team manager] and so many other truly outstanding staff all dedicated to delivering success to this club.”
