Wolves produce ‘worst chant this season’ to beg Man Utd target Neves to stay

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have been laughed at for producing the worst chant of the season after dubbing the words to their usual chant for Manchester United target Ruben Neves.

The Portuguese maestro, 25, is a popular figure at Molineux after helping the Black Country outfit back into the Premier League with some mesmerising displays in the Championship. Since then, his stock has risen to dramatic new heights and Neves has been tipped with a summer move in search of regular European football.

Man Utd, Arsenal and Barcelona are all said to be keeping close tabs on the slick midfielder who still has two years remaining on his current contract. Despite the constant links away, Wolves supporters are desperate for Neves to stay put and even changed the words to their usual chant to plead that he commits his future to the club.

"Don't sell Neves… Who? Ruben Neves… I just don't think you understand. If you sell Neves, Ruben Neves, you'll have a riot on your hands," rang around Molineux during the 1-1 draw against Norwich City on Sunday – their final home game of the season.

However, the dubbed anthem received waves of backlash on social media with football fans labelling it the "worst chant this season." One wrote: "That’s made me feel physically sick. One of the worst I’ve ever seen."

Whilst another jibed: "surely the worst chant ever created???" A third fan joked the chant should be enough for Neves to start packing his bags: "Worst chant in world football!!! #Wolves sounds like a chant from the MLS, if I was Neves I’d hand in a transfer request right away."

The former Porto captain was seen as a sensational coup for the then-second tier side in 2017 with Wolves paying a divisional record fee to pry him away from Portugal. The Black Country side forked out a staggering £15.8m with the Molineux faithful quickly taking him to heart.

The chant of "We've got Neves… Who? Ruben Neves… I just don't think you understand. He's Nuno Santo's man. He's better than Zidane. We've got Ruben Neves," rang around the ground throughout their promotion-winning campaign and carried on during a European clinching first season back in the top-flight.

Wolves boss Bruno Lage remained coy on whether Neves would be allowed to leave during the upcoming transfer window. He told reporters: "I really don’t know [if Neves will stay]. I don’t know what they sing, but if you tell me I’ll sing the same thing. I want what’s best for Ruben and the club and if Ruben stays I will be happy."
