Worrying Harvey Elliott injury update may force Liverpool into January transfers

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could be expected to sign a forward this January after a concerning announcement about the availability of Harvey Elliott.

The 18-year-old forward was stretchered off of the pitch in the match between the Reds and Leeds on Sunday with a fracture dislocation to his left ankle following a tackle by Pascal Struijk.

At first glance, the tackle by the Dutch defender looked like a routine tactical foul, however, his trailing leg landed on Elliott’s ankle and caused the injury.

Elliott had made four appearances this season for Liverpool, impressing in his newfound role as an attacking midfielder where he had the freedom to drift forward and cause problems.

However, Liverpool’s update on the Englishman would suggest that Anfield will not be cheering for their academy product anytime soon.

During a post confirming that surgery on Elliott’s ankle was successful, the club refused to give an indication of when he will return to the pitch, saying: “Elliott will now begin a rehabilitation programme with the Reds’ medical team and while he is expected to return to action later this season, no timescale is being placed upon his comeback.”

After the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum in the summer, there was plenty of pressure on Klopp’s shoulders to find a replacement within his squad or be able to rejig his midfield so the Dutchman’s absence was not noticeable. However, it appears that the former Borussia Dortmund manager is back at square one.

In the post, club doctor, Dr Jim Moxon said: “We won’t put pressure on him by setting a specific timeframe beyond being able to say with confidence we expect him to feature again later in the season following our rehab programme.”

For the month of January, it means Klopp will be without three of his five best forwards as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will both be representing their countries at the African Cup of Nations.

With Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino as Klopp’s only options in the final third, so, with the latter two unproven in the top-flight, Klopp could dip into the transfer window to bring in fresh faces.

The 2019/20 Premier League winners are closely monitoring RB Salzburg forward Karim Adeyemi according to transfermrket, who is valued at £18million.
