  • He has played only 21 games for the Premier League champions in three years

Manchester City’s American goalkeeper Zack Steffen underwent a medical at Championship side Middlesbrough yesterday ahead of a season-long loan.

The USMNT keeper leaves to secure first-team football ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with recent Arsenal signing Matt Turner providing competition for the No 1 jersey.

Steffen has spent the last two seasons as understudy to Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson at City, and he has only played twice in the Premier League since his arrival in 2019.

This latest chapter in Steffen’s career will not be his first spell away from City since he joined the Premier League champions from MLS side Colombus Crew for £6.1million.

The USMNT keeper spent the 2019-2020 season on loan at Bundesliga outfit Fortuna Dusseldorf, before suffering a back injury which curtailed a promising spell.

However Steffen has failed to ever cause Ederson any concern over his place in the side, and has played only 21 games for the Cityzens, 16 of those coming in the FA Cup and Carabao Cups.

The experienced German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega will wear the No 18 shirt next season

And of late his spot beneath the sticks even in the domestic competitions has come under threat after the arrival of Stefan Ortega.

The experienced German, who joined from Arminia Bielefield, will bolster City’s goalkeeping options and was manager Pep Guardiola’s second signing of the summer, after the high-profile arrival of Erling Haaland.

Speaking about his deal with City, the 29-year-old – who will wear the number 18 shirt – said: ‘This is a fantastic move for me. Manchester City are an amazing team – a squad with world-class quality in every area.

‘To be given the chance to join this group of players and help continue the Club’s success is a dream for me.

‘I have enjoyed my time in Germany and I want to thank the Arminia Bielefeld fans for their support. But this new challenge of coming to City and playing in the Premier League is too good for me to ignore.

‘I can’t wait to get started, meet my teammates and begin working with Pep and his backroom staff.’
