Zinchenko’s view on Mudryk at Chelsea speaks volumes for Arsenal clash
Oleksandr Zinchenko’s comments on Mykhaylo Mudryk at Chelsea speak volumes about the Arsenal star. The Ukrainian pair looked set to team up at the Emirates before Chelsea swooped in during the January transfer window.
Zinchenko has made an immediate impression at Arsenal since joining from Manchester City last summer. He won four Premier League titles at the Etihad, so brought something that the Gunners squad was lacking.
He has proven to be a leader both on and off the pitch for club and country in a hugely difficult 12 months for him and his fellow Ukrainians. Zinchenko was keen to see one of his international team-mates join him at Arsenal.
Mudryk emerged as a target for Arsenal last summer and the interest continued into the January window. Mikel Arteta saw a couple of bids rejected for the winger, who made it clear a move to north London was his first choice.

But Shakhtar Donetsk’s asking price was too high and Arsenal were beaten to a deal by Chelsea. It couldn’t have gone much worse for Mudryk since. He has often flattered to deceive in the appearances he has made for the Blues.
Chelsea’s situation could not have helped matters. They are in their worst form for decades, so coming into a squad like that was always going to be difficult.
But ahead of Chelsea’s visit to Arsenal on Tuesday, Zinchenko’s comments on Mudryk speak volumes about his character. In March, Zinchenko was asked about Mudryk’s failed move to the Emirates.
He revealed he has spoken to the 22-year-old since about the disappointment of not joining Arsenal. Zinchenko told Mudryk he must be fully focused on performing for his new club.

He told the Mail: “I said to him: ‘It’s gone already, it doesn’t matter what you wanted, what the other guys wanted’.
“‘Now you’re a Chelsea player, you signed a long-term contract and you have only one option, only one way: direct and forward’. Unfortunately he didn’t become an Arsenal player – as I wanted personally! – but it’s life.”
Zinchenko’s leadership has once again shone through. He easily could have turned on Mudryk slightly after he joined a London rival.
But he has continued to give him advice on how he can better his career. The dream move to Arsenal may be over but Zinchenko is still desperate to see Mudryk succeed.
