Zinedine Zidane 'rejects approach from PSG'

Zinedine Zidane ‘rejected approach from PSG to replace Christophe Galtier’ before the French giants ‘turned attention to Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique and Xabi Alonso as potential alternatives’

  • Julian Nagelsmann has been the most strongly linked to take over at PSG
  • Reports in France though suggest Zinedine Zidane was their top target
  • It’s claimed they looked elsewhere after the Frenchman turned them down

Zinedine Zidane has reportedly turned down an approach from Paris Saint-Germain to replace Christophe Galtier as manager.

PSG are expected to confirm the sacking of their current boss despite lifting the Ligue 1 title this season.

Former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann has been the most hotly-tipped to take on the role, though reports in France have indicated that he was not the first choice at the Parc des Princes.

Le Parisien have reported that former Real Madrid manager Zidane has been asked in recent weeks whether he would take on the job.

It’s said though that Zidane rejected their advances, and that the club have since turned their attentions to a number of managers including Nagelsmann.

Julian Nagelsmann has been the most strongly linked with the job in recent weeks, though French reports indicate that it was Zidane who was preferred to the ex-Bayern Munich boss

Xabi Alonso and Luis Enrique are also said to feature on PSG’s shortlist to replace Christophe Galtier

The French outlet also reported that former Spain manager Luis Enrique and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso also feature on PSG’s shortlist.

Nagelsmann and Enrique have also been linked with the Napoli job, after Luciano Spalletti announced that he would leave the club after guiding them to the Serie A title.

Enrique has held a club role in management since he left Barcelona in 2017, and he left Spain after the World Cup where they crashed out at the round of 16 stage to Morocco.

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Alonso only entered senior management back in October with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG are desperate to succeed in the Champions League – a competition they have not won until this date.

They were knocked out of the competition in the first round of the knockout stages – after two defeats to Bayern Munich when Nagelsmann was still in charge.

German reports over the weekend suggested Nagelsmann has also held talks with Napoli.

Reports from France though suggested that PSG had made the 35-year-old their priority to replace Galtier.

Nagelsmann was replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who went on to win the Bundesliga title with Bayern on the final day of the season.

During his time at Bayern, Nagelsmann won the Bundesliga in the 2021-22 campaign and also lifted two DFL-Supercups.

Chelsea had identified Nagelsmann as the first choice to be their new manager but he turned them down, with Mauricio Pochettino being appointed instead.

Tottenham showed initial interest in Nagelsmann but didn’t follow up on it, with Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou now the favourite to take charge.
