Aus Open match delayed for over 10 minutes because the players wouldn’t stop arguing

An Australian Open match has descended into chaos with a player argument involving Andy Murray’s brother Jamie delaying play for over 10 minutes.

The incident took place less than two games into a mixed doubles match between the No.1 seeded team of Marcelo Melo and the notoriously hot-headed Barbora Strycova against Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Murray.

Fans reported things kicked off after the Mattek-Sands and Murray team challenged a call, but then played on and hit a winner.

Melo and Strycova believed Mattek-Sands’ action counted as hindrance, and the chair umpire gave them the point as a consequence.

A very lengthy (maybe 10 mins) debate about the hindrance rule in the Murray/Mattek-Sands vs Melo/Strycova mixed doubles match. Referee on court and everything. Strycova: “This is a joke!”

Btw, it’s only the second game of the match. #AusOpen

All booting off in Jamie Murray's mixed doubles match.

There is a 10 minute (and 29 second) delay between points as Barbora Strycova labels an umpire call "a joke".

She also has a pop at Murray before we finally resume… with smiles.

That saw Murray “screaming” at the umpire with an Australian Open supervisor called to try and settle the argument.

Then Strycova got mad and went up to Murray. Then the call was finally challenged after 10 minutes and the ball was indeed out.

The official was unable to calm the players down, as would have been his intention.

Strycova, famous for her temper, was also fuming with viewers overhearing her scream “this is a joke!”

She and Murray argued after arguing with both the chair umpire and the tournament referee.

“Strycova is the calm one out here, it’s wild,” New York Times tennis writer Ben Rothenberg wrote, before minutes later tweeting “LOL Strycova is no longer the calm one out here”.

Strycova is famed for her blow-ups, and just last year at the Australian Open she and Yulia Putintseva had a very frosty post-match handshake.

Strycova and Melo went on to win the first set 6-3, but dropped the second 4-6 and then lost the match tiebreak 7-10 in an upset.
