Daria Kasatkina shares ‘out of control’ nasty online abuse despite winning match

Daria Kasatkina shared a snippet of the vile online abuse she received after beating Magda Linette at the WTA Elite Trophy. Despite winning the match, the Russian received a series of insulting messages as she claimed things were now “completely out of control”.

Kasatkina became the first player to qualify for the semi-finals at this week’s WTA Elite Trophy after winning both matches she contested in her round-robin group. The world No 17 defeated Linette 6-3 6-4 on Thursday, having already earned a 7-5 1-6 6-1 win against Barbora Krejcikova.

It means that she will advance out of the group into the semi-final with a 100 per cent winning record. Despite being victorious in both of her matches so far, Kasatkina was forced to take to X (formerly known as Twitter) to address the vile messages she had been sent following her win against Linette.

“I won btw. This s*** is completely out of control,” the 26-year-old wrote alongside screenshots of three different messages. One of the remarks was a death threat full of X-rated insults, while another user told Kasatkina: “I lost my bet because of ur stupidity.”

It comes just days after fellow WTA star Eva Lys also shared the torrent of abuse she received following a semi-final defeat at the Transylvania Open. The 21-year-old shared a collage of more than 20 vile comments and messages, which also included a series of death threats and extreme language. “Reality of a tennis player. Abuse is never okay,” Lys wrote.

Judy Murray recently voiced her concern over the abuse that young female tennis players were receiving from gamblers on social media. “Young girls [playing at the Billie Jean King Cup] were having problems with gamblers,” she said, per The Times.

“A lot of people put money on tennis players. If you’re one of the people who’ve lost them money then the death threats that come through, it’s horrible.” In Kasatkina’s case, the Russian made a point that she was still receiving abuse – including a message from someone admitting they lost a bet – despite winning her match.

The world No 17 is now waiting to learn who she will face in the semi-final. The WTA Elite Trophy comprises of 12 players who just missed the cut for the official top-eight WTA Finals. Stars are split into four groups of three with the winner of each group advancing to knock out semi-finals in a bid to make the final.
