Emma Raducanu leaves fans in stitches as Brit confirms latest surgery

Emma Raducanu shared a light-hearted update from her hospital bed on Friday as she underwent her second of three surgeries. Earlier this week, the 20-year-old announced that she would be missing several months of tennis to have procedures on both hands and her left ankle, ruling her out of Wimbledon and the French Open. But she was in good spirits as she left fans laughing with an Instagram Live video fresh after her left ankle surgery.

Raducanu rocked the tennis world when she announced that she would be having three surgeries over the coming weeks after battling with an injury on both wrists for the last 10 months. The world No 85 announced the news after her first hand procedure on Wednesday.

And she has already gone under the knife for the second time as her left ankle op was completed on Friday morning. The US Open champion let her fans know that “two of three [were] completed” in an impromptu Instagram live stream from her hospital bed and laughed as she struggled to find her words after the surgery.

“I’m munching on Pom Bears and Lotus Biscoff and an apple for balance,” she said, sharing her stash of snacks before laughing and stumbling over her words. Raducanu continued: “But I was so hungry because I couldn’t do any, I couldn’t eat and then after the surgery now I can eat but I’m not hungry. I feel like I’m making no sense here.”

The former world No 10 was still glad she could finally eat after the procedure, adding: “So good to eat but I just had my ankle done. So two out of three done and one to go but not for like two weeks’ time.”

Raducanu also thanked her fans for their support after announcing the news of her triple surgery on Wednesday. “I just wanted to say thank you for your support and your messages, and I’m sure I’ll see you around soon,” she said, laughing as she waved.

It comes days after she took to Instagram to post a photo of herself in a hospital bed after her first surgery, accompanied by a handwritten note offering an update on the next few months. “It is safe to say the last 10 months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury on a bone of both hands. I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try heal it, unfortunately it’s not enough,” she wrote.

Raducanu continued: “I’m having a minor procedure done on both hands to resolve the issues. I’m disappointed to share that I will be out for the next few months and while I am at it will have another minor procedure that is due on my ankle.

“It pains me that I will miss the summer events and I tried to downplay the issues so I thank all my fans who continued to support me when you did not know the facts. Looking forward to seeing you all back out there.”
