Novak Djokovic planning ‘bonus’ achievement after knocking Alcaraz down a peg
Halep given four-year ban from tennis over doping offences
Novak Djokovic has revealed that he would like to finish the year as world No. 1 following his success in the US Open. The Serb has won three of the four Grand Slams this season and is hopeful that he will remain ahead of Carlos Alcaraz for the remainder of the season.
The 36-year-old secured the 24th Grand Slam of his career at Flushing Meadows with a straight-sets victory over Daniil Medvedev. The victory meant that Djokovic drew level with Margaret Court on as many titles, and he will be eying up the Australian Open in January as his next top target in the hope of claiming the record for the most titles held by a singles player.
In the meantime, the Serbian is focused on enjoying the rest of the year and recently linked up with his fellow countryman to represent his nation in the Davis Cup.
However, Djokovic has revealed that he does have one final goal that he hopes to accomplish this year – remaining as world No. 1 after dethroning Alcaraz thanks to his US Open success. Having come incredibly close to winning all four Grand Slam titles this year, he was able to leapfrog the Spaniard and knock the Wimbledon victor down to No. 2.

Djokovic explained: “For me, ending the season as No.1 in the world would be like the bonus to a great season, but it’s not the priority. My priority was to win the top Grand Slam titles this season. I won three and in the fourth, I made the final.
“It has been a perfect year for me, in addition to now competing for my country. Everything that comes from now on will be a bonus.”

The US Open winner has received immense praise for his successes this year and was understandably overcome with emotion after his match-winning point against Medvedev. Speaking about his victory, former American star Andy Roddick went as far as claiming that Djokovic is the best ever, telling Betway: “The dominance of Novak and the way that he’s able to win this consistently is just absurd. He’s probably the most reliable player that we’ve ever had in the game.
“I wouldn’t bet against him on any given day, on any surface, in any format. It’s an impossibility to make a statistical argument against him being the best ever. It’s like proving gravity at this point. He’s now tied Margaret Court on 24 Slams but he wants all of the records, so he’ll want to get to 25. After that, he’s basically playing against his own shadow – there’s nothing else out there for him.”
