Conor McGregor’s coach lets big secret slip out ahead of Dustin Poirier clash

UFC: McGregor sends message to Poirier

Conor McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh appears to have ‘accidentally’ revealed some training secrets ahead of the Irishman’s return to the Octagon at UFC 257 to face Dustin Poirier. McGregor is set to fight for the first time in just over a year on January 24 in a highly anticipated rematch with Poirier, who he beat by TKO back in 2014.

Speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, Kavanagh was explaining what McGregor’s team would do after the fight when he revealed the 32-year-old had been “training mostly in orthodox for the whole camp” rather than his usual southpaw.

He said: “The fight will be over, we’ll be back on the super yacht and we’ll be heading to Dubai and we’ll all be sitting around staring at our phones and watching the fight back.

“We’ll be pulling it apart but also enjoying it, enjoying the techniques and the sequences.

“Let’s see if some of the predictions we made amongst ourselves about what would be the damaging shots, would training mostly in orthodox for the whole camp have paid off.”

Kavanagh then pauses for a second before asking Helwani: “Take that away, take that away, can you cut that out?”

It may all be mind games ahead of the fight but Kavanagh is looking forward to McGregor’s return and hopes he continues to compete inside the Octagon, despite talks of a boxing showdown with Manny Pacquiao.

He added: “I’m gonna pick MMA, all day, every day.

“(Floyd) Mayweather one was a great experience… If he gets the (Manny) Pacquiao fight, I will be one of those memes that it’s smiling but you see a tear coming down.

“I will high five him and wish him the best as he prepares for it.

“But I think we are on the path, on the journey to doing something extraordinary in mixed martial arts and that is where I would like him to go. Stick with MMA”.

Speaking to the Mac Life, McGregor revealed that “talks have been intensifying” about a bout with Pacquiao, saying: “I know that talks are intensifying for [a fight] this year.

“I am excited for a Manny Pacquiao bout and it looks like it will happen this year.

“What time this year? I am not sure.

“I am open to it all, ready for it all.

“I will certainly attain a boxing world title before I call it a day. And I would be excited to do that against Emmanuel Pacquiao.”
