UFC champ Leon Edwards plots ‘revenge’ fight with Masvidal after ‘sucker punch’

Newly-crowned UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards wants a revenge fight against Jorge Masvidal after he was punched outside of the ring in 2019.

Edwards was walking with security backstage at London's O2 when American fighter Masvidal stopped an interview and punched the Brit several times before security could intervene.

However, Evans has yet to have a revenge match despite continued bad blood between the pair. While Jamaican-born Edwards is still fresh from his success of beating Kamaru Usman to win the welterweight title, Masvidal has lost his last three fights including a knock-out by Usman last year.

Now Edwards has told The Jim Rome Show that he wants to fight Masvidal after the 'sucker punch' he received back in 2019. 'Yeah, 100 percent. That’s on my list," he said.

"But at the moment, Jorge, he’s on like a two-three fight losing streak. He needs to go out there, get some wins and make the fight make sense. That’s a fight I think would be massive for the UFC. To get my revenge on him, I cannot wait."

Edwards is at the peak of his form having won his last 10 fights and he knocked out Usman with just seconds remaining whilst losing the match on points.

Edwards added: "The kick was kind of like a hot knife through butter, just perfect. There was no pain, there was just a perfect impact. I see the way he folded over and I went to go for some ground and pound but he was already out. It was a fantastic moment."

Usman is the last fighter to have beaten Edwards by unanimous decision in 2015.

Now the pair have won one fight each, the British fighter is ready for a re-match before he prepares to take on Masvidal.

Edwards added: "I think Usman is deserving of the trilogy. I’d love to have it back in the U.K. In Wembley would be good. The O2 would be good in London. But yeah, I’d love to give him the rematch. Run it back again, let’s settle the score."
