UFC star Shanna Young cuts chunk of hair to make weight – but it wasn’t worth it

UFC flyweight contender Shanna Young was willing to sacrifice her hair in order to make weight for her bout against Miranda Maverick – but things didn't go to plan.

Having initially weighed in it at 127lbs – a pound above the official limit for a non-title bout, Young could only drop to 126.25lbs after another hour of trying to make weight.

With just a quarter of a pound to drop the 31-year-old got her team to take drastic action by cutting off the dreadlocks from the back of her head – leading to a success on a third weigh-in.

Writing on Instagram after Friday's weigh-in debacle, Young said: "Today was fun. We made weight and for those interested 9 dreads weigh .25 pounds."

Having avoided a cut to her purse and having to ask her opponent to fight at a catch weight, Young took on Maverick at UFC Vegas 64 on the final fight of the prelims.

Unfortunately for The Shanimal, she lost by way of unanimous decision 30–26, 30–26, 30–26 to bring her professional MMA record to 8-5.

The bout went ahead 11 weeks after it was initially booked for UFC 278 after Young was hospitalised prior to the official weigh-ins.

With Young eventually coming in on the limit, the event didn't become a record-breaker for the wrong reasons.

With four fighters missing weight – a fifth would've been a UFC first.

The headline fight was a huge victory for Amanda Lemos as she stopped Marina Rodriguez in round three after Neil Magny had submitted Daniel Rodriguez.

Shayilan Nuerdanbiek, Tagir Ulanbekov and Grant Dawson also picked up victories on the main card, with an Englishman winning on the prelims.

Jake Hadley beat Carlos Candelario by submission with a triangle choke having lost his unbeaten record last time out against Allan Nascimento.
