US Open chiefs were forced to make an apology back in 2018 after two fans were heard talking about ‘violent sex’ during coverage.

The pair were overheard going into precise detail about a previous relationship when Patrick Reed was on the first hole of the course, a tournament which was eventually won by Brooks Koepka.

The incident prompted US Golf Association to apologise as the entirety of the X-rated conversation was broadcast by Fox Sports, relaying across to millions of ears worldwide.

The explicit conversation started when one man said: "That's my ex." And the second man replied: “Yeah, she’s hot." But then things took a turn as the discussion went down a more sinister route.

The first one boomed: “That’s when I… I was f***ing her so hard and I headbutted her in the head and I smacked that b****. We went and kinda got in the [inaudible] position and she sat up.”

Indeed, it forced a USGA spokesperson Janeen Driscoll to apologise later: “We deeply regret the inappropriate language and sentiment expressed by a few fans that was unfortunately picked up by a microphone on the course during today’s broadcast. We are working closely with our partners at Fox Sports to address this issue.”

It comes as the 2023 event was one for the ages after Wyndham Clark held off four-time major winner, Rory McIlroy, to win his maiden championship.

It was a shock win for the 29-year-old who not only never finished better than 75th in a major championship but had missed the cut in his previous two U.S. Open's.

It was a tournament of record-breaking as the first round consisted of Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele both dismantling the U.S. Open scoring record by shooting 62 (−8).

Following Clark's victory, he admitted he was angered by the perception of him not being a contender for the major.

“It kind of p***** me off walking around and everyone was chanting ‘Rickie’ and ‘Rory’ and I get it, they’re fan favourites, but everyone kind of wrote me off.

"Even JT in his tweet was like: ‘I see Xander coming out hot’ and this and that – no mention of me and I was like: ‘Alright, boys, you know, get ready for it.’
