A Premier League club reportedly rejected the chance to sign Manchester United exile Mason Greenwood.

The 21-year-old secured his exit from United on Transfer Deadline Day, joining La Liga side Getafe on loan for the season after a proposed switch to Serie A's Lazio had fallen through.

It was announced last month that he'd be leaving his boyhood club after their internal investigation into his charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control had concluded.

According to The Athletic, Old Trafford chiefs decided a loan was the best option. In a scramble to get the move done before the window shut, agents contacted a whole host of European clubs – including Thomas Frank's Brentford.

Sky Sports is bringing you 500 live football games to watch, as well access to Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA and more across eight dedicated channels. Sky Sports is the only way to watch all the action this year.

£22 a month

The west Londoners, who sit eighth in the Premier League table after four games, are said to be among the English sides who declined, as did Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Roma. There was no interest from the Saudi Pro League, meanwhile, as they didn't want to risk the reputational damage.

The report also added that Greenwood's time in Spain can be cut short should Getafe wish. A break clause was inserted into the deal and can be activated once the January transfer window opens.

While that's often the case in season-long loans, it seems to have been inserted given the likely possibility that it doesn't work out for either party. Not only has Greenwood not played a competitive game of football for over 18 months, but there's also been fierce backlash to his signing.

A Spanish domestic abuse charity have already called for him to be axed. And Getafe manager Jose Bordalas defended their decision after a 2-1 defeat away at Real Madrid on Saturday (September 2).

He said: "I believe that the people and the relevant authorities did what they had to do and everyone knows how it ended with a non-conviction sentence therefore he is a free person, a footballer of a very high level and who arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm and that we are obviously going to help him so that he recovers back to his best level.”
