Tottenham defender Eric Dier has reportedly had a frank discussion with club chief Daniel Levy after failing to play a single minute in Ange Postecoglou’s first five games in charge. The England man has not been named in the squad once this season, and failed to secure a move away from north London before the Premier League transfer window closed on September 1.

The Telegraph have claimed that talks were held between Dier and Levy, likely regarding his current situation at the club, though there has been no suggestion that the pair had a falling out, despite being snubbed by the new boss at Spurs.

Postecoglou swapped to a back four, meaning one less place in defence, while he also signed Micky van de Ven in an initial £34.5million transfer from Wolfsburg to partner Cristian Romero – leaving Dier in the lurch.

Even after the departures of Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga have left Spurs light at the back beyond Van de Ven and Romero, Postecoglou is likely to use Ben Davies as cover while promoting talented youngsters Ashley Phillips and Alfie Dorrington as opposed to utilising Dier.

JUST IN Transfer news – Man Utd unveil signing, Chelsea exit possible[TRANSFERS]

It remains to be seen whether Dier will get a move away from the club, as the Saudi Pro League’s transfer window is open until 10.00pm UK time on Thursday. He could join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema in the Middle East but time is ticking on a potential deal.

Spurs recently allowed both Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele to leave for Galatasaray as the Turkish window does not close until September 15. Should Dier feel that an exit is necessary, he may have to join his team-mates as a result of a lack of options elsewhere.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. The fresh look for the 2023/2024 season features navy cuffs and a pattern that runs throughout the kit that is said to be inspired by the music scene and eclectic streetwear of the Tottenham

With one year left on his contract, Dier has been left in limbo similar to Hugo Lloris. The goalkeeper saw his captaincy removed when publicly announcing his desire to leave Spurs this summer, but a move has failed to materialise despite approaches from Saudi Arabia and Ligue 1 outfit Nice.

After their opening league game of the season, Postecoglou insisted that Dier remained part of his plans – but the weeks that followed suggested that was not the case. “Eric is part of this team. We left a few out,” Postecoglou said after the 2-2 draw at Brentford.

“We left some players on the bench that are very good players. We need a strong squad, it’s not about 11 players. Eric is in the same boat as all the other boys. He’s working hard in training and available for selection. My decisions then are what I think will give us the best chance of success for any given game and then we reassess the week after. Nothing really unusual there.”
